Doggie help… cold weather advise…..?
What is the acceptable temperature for bringing a short-haired dog out of the cold?
Our dog is a rottweiler mix with short to medium hair.
I think a good time to bring the dog in is 32 degrees F or less.
My husband thinks in the teens?
We have a dog house with lots of straw?
I am concerned with hypothermia and frost bite.
What do the experts say?
I think even when it’s a little cold you should bring your dog in. Even if a dog has a lot of fur it doesn’t mean they don’t get cold ! My long haired chihuahua had tons of fur and you can tell she still gets cold outside. Don’t be cruel I don’t think you would like to be in the cold even if you had tons of hair !

We have a boxer puppy and she acts fine when we take her out @ like 6am when its only in the teens but leaving him/her out for the night you’ll probably need more than straw but talk to your vet. about this one.
Hope I helped!

I say with a short haired dog, think about what would be comfortable for you. Real short haired dogs like rotts, don’t have much to protect them. Dogs also aren’t able to regulate thier body temp like humans are. Having 1/2 strands of hair all over isn’t like having a blanket exactly….If you’re outside in the cold, does your head not get cold? I would say if it gets below 50 degrees, bring the dog in. Unless of course he has a doghouse with blankets or straw…then I’m sure he will be fine. Even with the dog house though, below 32 is way to cold… If there is snow on the ground, definetly don’t leave him out. If we couldn’t stand outside for more than an hour, then it’s too cold for our dog to stay out there for more than an hour. This is speaking of a rott though….Now if you have a husky or chow, those little guys are more than capable of fighting winter.

don’t worry about frost bite unless its like -10 degrees and left for a long time. if the tempurature gets below 20 degrees its probably safe to bring the dog inside. rottweilers were not bred for cold tempurature so if it is cold you can put some hay out for him to lay on. blankets, towels or something relative he could chew on and mess up your yard. hey bales are cheap. pnmonia is what your really worried about. so if you want your dog to stay healthy keep him warm.

i live in Florida and have two dogs. one of my dogs weighs 100 lbs the other weighs only 35 lbs. With the cold weather lately I bring them both in when it gets to be about 40 F. When my 100 lb dog starts to shake from being cold they come in right away. On other nights when it is cold but not to cold i cover them up with heavy blankets and thermal blankets so they stay warm through out the night.

My dogs sleep inside, but I do have outdoor kennels for when I’m gone during the day. I don’t like to leave them outside below 50, and absolutely will not below 40. And my dogs have medium to long coats.
I don’t know whether or not your dog will get hypothermia or frostbite, but what I will tell you is that straw is not always safe as bedding. I knew some people that got a new puppy and put him outside in his kennel for an hour after they brought him home. When they went back to get him out, he was dead. After the necropsy, it was discovered that there was a toxic mold growing on the straw that he had inhaled, and that’s what killed him.
Please consider keeping your dog inside during the cold weather. All you have to do is put him in a crate, or if not that then in a bathroom or laundry room (just pick up the rugs, but maybe leave an old towel or blanket that you don’t mind if it gets torn up, so he can lay on it). Good luck!

I have a german shepherd, lab and a Miniature Shepherd, and the lab mix comes in when he wants to and sits by the slider…I can’t get the miniature to come in for nothing, even if its 17′. So I put Sleeping bags, 3 of them, on and near the Miniature S. and she gets under them as much as she wants and is very comfortable. She is out of the wind so that does make a difference and is under shelter. Short hair, they need to come in about 40…they just don’t have enough to keep them warm…and straw, you might want to try Sleeping bags for more warmth. I am such a lover of dogs….give them the house and hubby can go sleep in the straw…no offense hubby. I can’t stand to see any family members cold.oops hubby just came home..gots to run …

Hi,
Winter is a beautiful time of year. It can be a dangerous time as well, it doesn’t have to be. With a few sensible precautions, you and your dog can have a wonderful time enjoying the icicles, the snow banks, and the warm, glowing fire at the end of the day. Here’s more info:

I believe if you are going to own a dog they belong in the house .. Dogs are domesticated (in case you haven’t heard) they dont belong outside all the time.

Hi w.c.cl’arma,
You have every reason to be concerned with your dog getting hypothermia & frostbite while he / she is left outside in cold weather. Not only their paws exposed to frostbite, their ears nose and genitalia are also.
From what I’ve researched, vets don’t have a set tempterature to bring in dogs from cold weather. However, they all agree that they should be brought in from the cold.
Here are some links from some experts I think you’ll find helpful.

I have large & small dogs that stay inside & when they have to go out in the cold to do their business, I’ll put their shoes (they’re like boots). They also wear dog sweaters.
May God bless you, your family & your dog.
