why do christians need to know that jews can't eat shrimp or pork?
what’s the point of christians reading the old testament if it doesn’t apply to them other than the ten commandments?
why don’t they just remove all the bits they ignore or don’t agree with rather than embarrass themselves and having to explain the reason they ignore the bits they don’t like?
I’ve no idea at all, at all.

so christians can rub it in the jews faces.

the old testament in my opinion offers background knowledge for the new testament
sure some things might not look important
but there’s a reason for everything that’s written in the Bible

The same reason that our History books are filled with information about the beginnings of civilization that maybe we "don’t need to know." As Gentiles, we were grafted into Gods plans after Jesus arrived on the scene.

I haven’t noticed any Christians ignoring the old testament. We believe that the law was fullfilled by Jesus the Christ but it was not erased.

Well, they should read the Old Testament to know where their religion comes from. It is holy to them, too.
Also, to etiquette: Do you want to piss off your Jewish guests?

There is so much more to the bible than what you all focus on, you are denying yourselves so much!

But what’s the point of you scouring the bible for bits that you don’t agree with, especially as you have no belief in god? What’s the point of you even coming on answers if you have nothing useful to contribute? (yeah yeah, i know, i’m blocked)

The Hebrew scriptures are the BACKGROUND… for the christian religion.
it gives you the WHY
..
some of the things do apply in priciple… not law… such as Do not kill, Do not commit adultry etc.
most of these things are again covered in the christian greek scriptures…

Your gut will tell you fast enough whether something is good to eat. It was formed a very long time before the OT was written.

to understand God’s character. to understand history. to learn from history. to learn principles and morals from the OT.

The point of anyone reading anything like the Old Testament is to increase their knowledge and understanding of the way people thought. I cannot understand anyone now taking the fairy stories of the bible as anything but a way of simple people explaining things they didn’t understand.

The reason is that they took the Jewish bible, made a few thousand changes to it to reflect their pagan man/god, called it the "old testament", then tacked it onto the front of their new testament in order to try to give their new testament some legitimacy.
Nothing in the Jewish bible ever applied to Gentiles in the first place except the Gentile Covenant known as the Noahide Covenant. This is what the Jews taught to the Gentiles ever since receiving the Torah.
But Christianity threw that out, then lied and said that the Jews kept God from the Gentiles "but the curtain was torn in the holy of holies to signify that the Gentiles now had access to God as well".
The entire New Testment is really nothing but one big lie about Jews, Jewish law, Jewish customs, even Jewish food. It demonizes the Jews repeatedly, while replacing them and Judaism with the new Christianity which comes actually from paganism if you look at what they believe. None of it comes from Judaism.
But, Christianity has to tell its followers that what they believe comes from Judaism because it sure cant tell them it all comes from paganism.
This is why they have to have the "old testament" with its thousands of changes (and most Christians are unaware of these changes) in the front of their bible. They think it gives their new testament legitimacy as having come from Judaism- and more than that, as the replacement for it.

The old covenant was for the Jews and doesn’t apply to Christians that’s what Galatians is all about. The Old testament is beneficial because it shows the character of God.

Yeah. Too right. Bet Jesus never ate a hot dog, bacon, rabbit, seagull, cockle, clam, cat etc. in his life but you see plenty of Christians happily chomping away on (some) of those things even though the bible forbids it. No-one has ever explained that to me properly,

1.. Because Christianity is based on Judaism.
2.. Same as above.
